So I just aquired a 1972 Vega and I have a few newbie questions. I can't find anywhere that lists the mast height. Down here in Florida we have a bunch of bridges around and I need to know with a pretty reasonable degree of accuracy how high my mast is and so far I havent felt like climbing to the top with a tape measure. Also wondering how I figure out which hull number I have. Im hauling her into a marina tommrow to start to undo several years of neglect. Wish me luck.

Good luck with your project!

I seem to remember that the height of teh Vega whilst floating is about 11.6 metres. Dont take that for gospel but that figure seems to stick in my head.

My mast is 9m long so that sounds right to me. You'll have to add a
bit for VHF aerials/ windex etc.

11.6m means that a vega should just fit under tower bridge in London
at low water springs. Mid stream there'd be enough depth. God knows
what the police would do if you tried though (and London bridge would
stop you half a mile further on).

Hi.:
According to the Vega-Plan, the hight of the mast (above water) is 34.45 feet (or 10.6 Meter..Steve, looks like you gave another meter..). But for safety, use 35 feet (most bridges in Florida have 62 feet clearence).
I'm also from Florida, sail in Barns Sound, or anchor at Pumpkin Key and go out into the stream via Angel Fish Creek. Where are you located?
Good luck with your Vega- I have mine for over 30 years

Wilhelm is close enough for government work in southern Florida waters. Plus any bridges south of Coconut Grove (Miami) are very high bridges. My Proctor mast measured in at 29 feet 10 inches. Of course you have to consider the Windex and/or antenna (aerial). I figured mine topped out at a guestimated 38 feet clearance from the water line. Never had a problem anywhere in Florida. Sure wish I was back there with Cin Cin !

Thanks guys.. the help is much appreciated. Im located in Merritt Island,
right next to Cape Canaveral on the east coast of central Florida. I will
most likely be sailing both in the Indian River and out Port Canaveral on
the ocean. Thanks again.
