All: as you may have read, this is our first boat and our first season with GRATIS, our '72 Catalina 22. We hauled her last weekend (sniff, sniff) and were not surprised to see much of the keel with rust spots and pock-marks. When we got her, a wise friend told us "Sail her, have fun with her, but don't spend a lot of money on her because you'll never get it back when you sell her." We want to fix up the keel to prevent further damage, but don't want to spend a lot doing so. (We will be doing it ourselves.) My question: What's the best source (book, Website, magazine, etc.) for learning the basics of scraping, epoxying, etc. a keel and boat bottom? Many thanks, Kim

Check out this site

The link below is from a frequenter of the Trailorsailer site. She pulled and re-did an Ensanada 20 keel. http://www.dcwi.com/~nybarra/keel.html Looks like a lot of work, but not alot of costs. After you look over her write-up, also check out: http://www.sailboatowners.com/trailersailor/index2.tpl and ask more specific questions. Lots of Catalina 22 owners over there, and they're always happy to help out a 'newbie'. Dave

Catalina Direct has a video

You can get a video on keel refinishing from Catalina Direct. Please see the link below. As you have a 1972 C-22, I feel your best course may be to remove the keel and check it out. If the vessel has been in salt water most of its life, then there may be serious erosion. Note that you could possibly break one of thefour bolts that hold the keel in its hanger, in which case you will suddenly have a lot more work to do. Shy of removing the keel, you can just grind the keel down using a Mikita 5 inch sander with 36 grit paper. Following that, apply a coat or two of Petit 6980, followed by a coat or two of either Petit Protect Epoxy Undercoater or Interlux 2000 (or 3000 for cooler weather) Epoxy Undercoater, and follow that with two coats of abalative anti-fouling paint (West Marine's is fairly inexpensive) assuming you're in Bridgeport, Connecticut and sail in Long Island Sound.

UM.....

OK, here's where I truly show my ignorance... you can remove a FIXED KEEL? It does have a fixed keel, not a swing keel. Thanks again.

Look in the bilge for bolts.

On our 27, the keel bolts/nuts are visible in the bilge. Might be the same for your 22. Paul "Hamlet's Mill"
