Hello Everyone,
I just bought a Mac 25 "lawn ornament" that I am refurbishing. Having primarily only sailed Hobies in the past I am not sure how to rig this thing, esp. the mainsail/ sheet. I know I am missing a block or two based on pics I have found on the internet but I was wondering if others could post pics of there main sheet/ tackle with descriptions so I can replace the blocks etc. Thanks in advance!

I have attached a couple pics of the setup as is.pic1.jpg

hello and welcome to the family

my 1st sailboat was a Mac25... I loved sailing it... it will be a good boat and will take some punishment from mistakes as you learn... do not be afraid to go out and sail it... here are some drawings of how it should be rigged... I hope they help... I set me Mac25 up for solo sailing, so every rope on my boat came into the cockpit for easy reach... what kind of rudder do you have on your Mac25 ?... mine had a kick-up rudder system... it is great if there are frequent submerged objects in your lake... the 1st 3 pictures are of mainsheet rigging used on the Mac25... the 4th picture is the mast raising gin pole system.. the last pcture is of main sail reefing ....

I attached a traveler in my cockpit just aft of the cabin doors and used mid boom sheeting... l prefer this type of set up as to the end of boom main sheeting..

hope these help...If you have any more questions, ask...

sincerely
Jess

Jess, great help and pictures.

You mentioned end of boom versus mid boom sheeting. I of course have a 26S. I don't have a traveler but my sheet connects right outside the companionway door. My question relates to my sheeting. I have mid boom (more like 2/3) and and of boom points. What is the preferred point and why have both. Keep in mind my boom (and mast) are not OEM.

I know a traveler or a vang would be better especially for downwind running and mid sheet seems to keep a more downward pull than when at the end when the boom is out over the water (uses less line too). If my logic is correct, why would I use the end of boom point or would those be better only if I had a vang?

hello

the mid boom sheeting lets you better control of the sail shape... the end of boom allows for better swing of sail, but not the downward force to give better sail characteristics... the vang helps with that... a traveler will help like the vang, but repositions your mainsheet for the control of the sail... a vang is used mostly when you have your boom swung way out over the gun'ale... the vang can also double as a preventer for the boom in the case of a jibe when running downwind...

My Morgan 35ft uses end of boom sheeting... the boom rotates for reefing the main sail... and I have a traveler for sheeting the main...

Great visual aids and advice everyone thanks. I have a couple extra Hobie blocks I will rig up for the main sheet. I don't see any place on the boom or mast for a down-haul/ boom vang to attach though. That is a bit disconcerting! I imagine the boat sails like sh!t without one. Any thoughts?

hey Doc, maybe that end of boom point was just for a topping lift? your rig is off a Hobie 18, right?

Your M25 will sail with its original end of boom sheeting but if you want to get the most out of her you will need to:
Rig a boom vang, not very expensive
Set up a traveler with mid boom sheeting, check out eBay, got mine for $250 with everything needed
and lastly change out the redder, lots of posts on this site on how to construct one. If you buy one could be the most expensive upgrade but worth it.
There are lots other upgrades you can make to the M25 they make it a different boat and are fun to do.
Mine is actually competitive and I really enjoy racing it. You know when two sail boats are within sight of each other its a race.
Enjoy you M25
