Next week, we intend to sail our Catalina 27 up the east coast from Chesapeake Bay to New York. I note on the chart a "New York Vessel Traffic Service Area" that indicates you're supposed to contact the Coast Guard. Does anybody know if this applies to pleasure craft? If so, what VHF channel? Also, any recommendations on a place to overnight either on the Lower Bay or just up the Hudson from Manhattan? Thanks, Egon Frech

If it does,

I have done the trip into New York Harbor several times in the last few years, have not notified CG.(One trip with a professional Captain.) Good marina at Liberty Landing, just North of Statue, there are some smaller ones further North too. You can anchor at Sandy Hook NJ, in the bay, at Horse shoe cove, or to the right just before the Narrows Bridge. Someone better aquainted will answer the post to be sure. Good Luck, I think the worse part of your trip will be the Delaware Bay, try to begin the trip South on the end of the flood tide at reedy point, possibly an hour before high tide, the trip down the bay will be a bit easier that way. Sandy Hook area

A friend of mine belongs to the Keyport Yacht Club. They are located across the bay from New York, and the bay itself is great. I don't know it they would be okay with overnight mooring, or not. Liberty State Park is a beautiful marina, and the facilities are great, too. Have a good trip!

Just did the Trip

I just did the trip this past weekend, from Bay Shore LI, into New York Harbor and up the Hudson. I did't contact the Coast Guard, but I did stay out of the Navigation lanes and out of the channel up through the Narrows and into the Harbor. There is a lot of traffic, between the freighter's, Barges and ferry's, so keep a close watch, they all come up on you very fast. I did stay overnight at Liberty Landing Marina, it is very nice. I gave them a call as I was comming up the Narrows (used my cell phone) and since it is early in the season they had plenty of slips available. If you stop there the Transient dock is 'D' dock, plus you have a great view of Manhattan. By the way Circus Soliae (I know that I spell it wrong) is right there, we didn't go in as we were all just wiped out. Also the Marina Office is an old Light Ship. Good luck, and have fun.

NYC Area

I sail in this area and I have never, ever heard any pleasure craft contacting the CG - nor have I every heard anyone ever mention any such requirement. As far as places to stay - I agree with all previous comments. Liberty Marina also has a ferry service that takes you to Manhattan if you want to see the city. There are yacht clubs in the Raritan Bay you can stay for free or minimal charge -

Egon, Here in San Francisco Bay, we also have a Vessel Traffic Service. The purpose is to provide safety separation schemes for commercial shipping. It is not necessary for recreational boats to check-in or participate unless they are running a CG permitted marine event (like a sailboat race). It is helpful to listen to the VTS channel in order to get an idea of where the shipping is going. They do use some jargon but you can generally figure out where the ships are headed. There are generally 2 channels used by VTS; one for VTS to ship communications, and one for ship to ship comms. Here in San Francisco, CH 14 is for VTS to ship and 13 is for ship to ship comms. I've provided a link to the New York VTS. Contact phone numbers are listed there. Give them a call for more info such as channels used, etc. Rodney Kidd C-38 #297, Flying Bear

There is another marina just a bit up from Liberty and it is called Montrose. I found Liberty to be kind of a strange place. Montrose is closer to the Hudson and the view is fabulous, but it is a little more rocking. They also have a wonderful resturant.
