I am having a house built in port charlotte which should be ready in one year or more. I'll be planning to sail my 290 hunter from long Island ny to my aunts house in ft myers some time after the house is ready plus I'll be retired. I am wondering what is the best time of year to plan this trip,I will not be in a hurry and will plan to stop as often as possible along the way. I have plenty of time to plan this trip and will be checking out some cruising books for this trip which I am really looking forward to. nick

Hey Nick -

Congratulations on the new house! I'm jealous! Wish I was going to Florida now - but it will have to wait a few years. I've got a friend in Punta Gorda who has a 36' Islander - the boat I first sailed on in about 1977. If you see/hear Zestt around the harbor, give Joan and Mike a call and tell them I said hello!

Hi Gregg

I was in punta gorda a few weeks ago and it was great out on the water sailing, but what a drag coming back to this snow. I started getting my boat ready for spring but had to stop until the snow melts. I am trying to run the radar cables and installing a windless while its still on the hard but this dam winter won't give up. I;ll still be here at least another year or two before I get to enjoy all that sailing in florida. I am sure your looking forward to sailing your new boat. nick

Nick, here's a sequence I think you'd enjoy...

...and don't forget to look at the recent archives as this was recently discussed at length WRT a large Hunter owner (the boat, not him <g>...) who needed to relocate to Tampa from New England and some of the same advice will apply. June-August: final prep, shakedown & provisioning in Long Is. Sound, sightseeing in New York at the 79th St. moorings (washy but not expensive) and transiting the NJ coast August-September: transit Chesapeake Bay; it will still be hot, muggy and buggy but the Bay's a joy almost any time; arriving earlier will insure it's even hotter and more windless but you'll have more time to enjoy both the Western & Eastern Shores October-November: transit down the ICW to FL's border while staying ahead of the increasingly deeper fronts with lower temps as you move South December-January: finish running FL's east coast and run either around to Ft. Myers via Marathon on Vaca Key or direct via the Okeechobee Waterway from Stuart. Most folks like to leave the Bay a bit later, so they can visit the Annapolis Boat Shows (sail, the power) in mid-October but you pay a penalty in shorter days, colder temps and more fronts further south for the rest of the trip.
