New windows.

Dear Steve,
I replaced the windows last week. It took me quite a while (three
days) because a) the weather was very cold, b)I'm not used to the
system yet c) the thickness of the hull. Arend Schram's advice was a
great help and the instructions he has put on paper is the best thing
I've read so far. Unfortunately it was not available (on paper) at
the moment I started installing the windows. If Arend agrees, I'll
make a translation for you (and for the other Vegaterians of course).
But now all the suffering is almost forgotten and what remains is a
Vega that looks much more beautiful than before.
Happy Easter to all.

P.S. Anybody interested in having the old windows (glass only)?

Hi Flor

I am glad you are pleased. I would be very grateful for the translated
instructions of Arend as he has installed many sets of windows. Any photos
would also be appreciated.

Kind Regards

Steve Birch

moisture is an enemy of electric equipment. Try an automotive store to get a match ==many times it is generic and much cheaper. jorgen

Stephen, I'm still interested in the window scheme for later Vegas(V3233). Also can you or anyone tell me what will kill a solenoid. I dewinterized this weekend and after 45 minutes of the old MD7A rolling along when I tried to restart I got Zero from the Key. Traced it to the solenoid for the Bendix and it was dead. What killed it? Also do I have to replace it with a VOLVO? I'm going into the starter while it's out but would rather stay away from anything that says BOAT.

No, you don't have to replace it with a Volvo part. Take it to a NAPA auto
parts store and ask them to find you one that is functionally the same. I
replaced the $500 voltage regulator/starter solenoid on my O 22 with a Ford
solenoid and Volkswagen regulator at a total price of about $60.

Hi Dave

The windows are great for the later Vega. The difference is the thickness og
the fibreglass so you need slightly longer bolts but that is about all.

I expet it is just the solenoid that is dead. They can be obtained from Volvo
and I will have a look to see if I have an old one as I changed a Volvo
MD7A to
a Beta last year and I still have the old engine in the shed.

It was probablly killed by age, as all of us. I expet the strater will be ok
but if you take the solenoid off and apply 12 volts then it should click,
if it
doesnt then it it knackered. Remember that the case of it is the negative
supply.

Hi Steve,
I'm still waiting for Arend's permission. Hope to see him next weekend at
the "Zuiders evenement".
Our windows are fine but the big one on the starboard side has to be taken
out again because there's a leak. We found this out while sailing unreefed
to Dunkerque in a 6/7 wind (sailed on one ear as the say in Holland)and the
windows were submerged :)
Kind regards,
Flor
