Thinking I should upgrade to all new winches, any ideas what make and model would work well on the Vega? Please advise.Thanks,Larry Sent from Windows Mail
MY thinking is that Vega is a pretty small boat and sails are small
as well. We all haul sails by hauling on a halyard and when the sail
reaches the top of the mast we give a couple cranks on the winch. I
feel this last snubbing up of the halyard can be done just as well
with the Vega winches using the lever built onto them. There is
only a couple or three inches of halyard to take up. This is nothing
like the 3 to 6ft of Jenny sheet that needs to be pulled in by
turning the winch with a winch handle. By the way I dropped mine
over board so had to buy a new one. It's hard to drop the handle of
the winches that came on my
Vega.

I had to replace my mast a few years ago. What I did was to take the original cockpit winches, rebuild them, then installed them on the mast. I then bought new Lewmar 16s for my new cockpit winches. That way I got new and larger winches for those winches I use the most.
