So I broke a tooth off one of my rachet gears on my maxwell 23's and decided to buy new Harken winches instead since the old ones were 25 years old.

I havent got the new winches yet but I'm assuming that the bolt pattern will be different and I'll re-glass the holes and drill new ones.

Now the old winches. I plan to sail to Mexico and everyone says to bring as many spares as you can but with these brand spanking new winches think its worth it to take up space with the oldies?

So please respond with what you would do (mind you its only a 31ft boat so space is at a premium)

a. keep um as backups
b. sell um and use the space for other more important things

Sell 'em.. Use the dollars for spares that are more likely to break .. like an alternator and a fresh water pump for cabin water. deck blocks (check the sheaves for UV damage).. Stuff like that.
Ya may not have to glass in teh old mounting holes.. If the new ones are different, you can rotate the new holes to be mid span (or close) between the old holes .. Some healthy dabs of 5200 in the old holes to seal 'em and you're good. (tape the bottoms well, first)

Forget the old ones. If one broke, what's to prevent the other one from going? Put the new ones on and buy and bring repair kits. No brainer.

Tape the bottoms well? Not sure what you mean.

I mean tape the bottoms of the old holes when ya glob in the 5200 so that it does not get into the cabin .. and in your hair.. and on your shorts... and in the upholstery.. :~)
