My 2000 340 needs new tank sensors. The gauges simply do not read and when they do they jump from empty to full, regardless of how much is in any tank.
Is removing the original tank sensors fairly straight forward? They have 5 and 6 screw mounts and simply enough wiring.
Has anyone done this? After testing the gauges themselves, using the WEMA site directions I found that the gauges are not the problem, They have the correct amperage going through them. So it has to be the tanks sensors themselves. Thanks for any input.

Re: Wema

sailcapt:
The the sending units on the waste and fuel tanks are easy enough to remove (I haven't had a problem with the water). See my post with pictures on the waste tank sending unit cleaning process:

After it plugged up again (2 years) I decided to bite the bullet on an external tank sensor and a new monitoring unit to replace water, waste and fuel gauges. I still had to buy a WEMA sending unit for the diesel tank, but it all works fine now. See this description of the process:

Let me know if you have specific questions, my email is linked in the owner's directory.

My 356 needs the sensors repaired as well but in this case it's a pair of metallic strips taped to the outside of the tank. Not sure who makes them or where to get them.

If factory installed external sensors they are probably Snake River sensors. I used to sell those to Hunter years ago. The engineer that designed those and myself went off on our own to form Ferriello Sales LLC / New Providence Marine
If you would like to talk about the sensors I will help you figure out if it is the sensor our the panel.
send me an email or call me and I will help you.

Also Thanks Ed for the great article, you did a great job, glad I could help you.

Is your holding tank made of poly with a five screw sending unit? Our H336 holding tank gauge didn't work (the H336 became the H340), but we ignored it until the day we overfilled the tank and we got sewage leaking from the sending unit gasket. Had to replace it. What we found was that the original Wema sending unit was some sort of weird bellows type assembly that was a pain in the ass to get out. Note to self - remember to keep mouth closed when yanking difficult to remove components out of holding tank. The replacement unit we ordered from Wema was a nicely constructed stainless steel unit. Problem was it was a six screw mount, and required a larger opening in the tank. Had to take a jigsaw to the tank opening to enlarge it, and then drill new holes for mounting screws. Then, it was a BIG challenge to get the parts that fit inside the tank through the hole and held in place while I fitted the sending unit and screwed it together. I dropped one of the machine screws in the tank, and had to make a quick run to West Marine to get another. Finally, it turned out the old sending unit (and gauge) used some kind of three wire connection, and the new sender was a two wire hookup. So I had to turn around and order a new gauge as well. I was able to use two of the three wires in the existing harness to hook everything up, but I had to make a Radio Shack run to pick up a quick disconnect for the sender wiring, because I didn't want to hardwire it in (probe can be unscrewed from the tank for cleaning, but it will twist the wires all up if you don't incorporate a way to disconnect the wires). Everything now works great, but it turned out to be a much longer job than anticipated.
