I'm about to install a new water heater and was wondering what I was going to run into with the heat ex-changer hook-up, do I need to worry about getting air in the "loop" or can I just disconnect the old, reconnect the the new and top off the cooling water system?? Thanks ahead for the help.

I think you'll find that if you minimize the amount of coolant lost by keeping the hose ends capped and elevated, you'll be fine with a top off.

When I replaced mine a few years ago, I just hooked it up to the hoses and electrical connections. I did shut off the engine hoses prior and opened them afterward in case any coolant was likely to run out. I don't recall having any problems and the air in the line should purge itself. Be sure to check your over-flow tank after a couple of engine runs and make up any coolant that fills into the water heater HX.

What Rich describes is sometimes called "Burping" the coolant loop. Do a search on "burp" or "burping", we've discussed it before. Some have to do so, others not. Good luck.

Stu:

This happens quite often when I drink a few cold beer in a very short period of time. I find that if I spread it out a little the "burping" is not an issue!

Ron:

Make sure that you use the same type of coolant when you top off your system.
