new vega owner and 0-22 on e-bay

Greetings, I recently purchased my first sailboat and was lucky enough
to acquire a 1975 Vega #2766 currently named Isis. This boat was
donated to a local community college and then sold to me. It formerly
resided in Washington, NC. The interior had been disassembled and
panels stacked in the v-berth and no mainsail (burned in a shed fire
I was told). I chose to buy the boat without the 20hp beta diesel
that had been sitting in the boat since 1999 without being installed.
I am currently trying to decide whether to put an outboard on her or
try to find a small diesel I can rebuild. Any advice would be greatly
appreciated. I know very little about sailboats. I plan to use the
boat as weekend getaway for my family. There is not much deep water
inshore near our home in Beaufort, NC, so most of my sailing will be
in the ocean near shore. In my quest for an engine I ran across an
Albin o-22 for sale on e-bay. It is too far away for me to consider
(Seattle, WA) but I thought some of you may be interested. I think
the auction ends Nov.2 and is currently at $9.95.

Your Vega is an ex-MD6A diesel one so the Albin 022 will not fit and to be
frank it will be a waste of time and effort to get it going, keep it going.
The
spares are very expensive. Keep a look out for someone who is changing their
old MD6A or think about the Beta. If you can get the 20HP Beta you were
talking
about at a decent price then grab it with both hands.

Good luckSteve Birch Vega "Southern Comfort" V1703

We use our Vega as a summer escape just as you plan to do with your family. It has been a delight to escape the City for "Vegations" as we call them. Good Luck with Isis. Steve Birch gives very good advice from which almost all of us have benefitted. He has forgotten more than most know. A diesel is a thing of beauty on a sailboat.

Last March, I purchased an Albin Vega # 1878. The inboard diesel is the
MD6A that was originally installed when the boat was built (1973). This
engine is no longer functional and needs to be replaced. I am planning to
replace the engine with the Beta twin BZ482. This is a form, fit, and
function replacement. I am presently sailing her with an Evinrude 8.0
outboard. I also installed an outboard engine mount on the port side. This
engine has been working fine on my boat.

A couple of years ago my 0 22 stopped running while I was in Pittsburgh California, in the Sacramento Delta. Neither I nor two local mechanics could get it running. I went to West Marine and bought an outboard bracket that I mounted on the center of the transom, I took the five hp Force outboard off the dinghy, and used it to get home. I have been using it ever since. I visited with Emile when I picked up the trailer last weekend. He is using a center transom mounted four horsepower four stroke. I don't think the larger outboards are necessary unless maybe you are bucking a head sea and high wind.
