I think we could start an interesting thread by listing items we use that others may not. For example: Transmission oil changer and filler - Turkey baster It could be fun and might give us all some ideas we can use.

Engine liquids

The engine has several places where there are 'vent lines'(for lack of a better expression) which vent liquids into the engine compartment. One of these, for example, is for the heat exchanger and exits near the 'radiator cap'. Another vents off the aft end of the engine near the mixing elbow (on a 3GM30F, I think this is a vent for salt water - without the line the salt water drips on the engine and gets it rusty). I've added another vent hose for bleeding air out of the antifreeze line just above the thermostat. Each of these hoses I put into a plastic bottle (Seattle 'Talking Rain' water bottle). The lable is removed which provides a clear view of the liquid level and the small opening on top helps to prevent the hose from poping out. Use #2 for these plastic bottles is to wrap them around hoses where the hoses rub against anything to prevent chafe. I cut the top and bottom of the bottle off then split the side. This provides a nice piece of plastic for wrapping around the hoses. Use plastic wire-ties to hold them in place. On aircraft the mechanics use silicone sealant between things that rub against each other and that could be done also. A little sealant on the hose before puting on the plastic will prevent it from sliding up or down.

Any ideas?...

...on how to get clean oil into the top loading Yanmars more easily? I use a screw-on filler cap (mounts on a quart bottle) that has a shutoff and a short length of hose on the spout. I position the hose into the filler then open the twist valve open and pump the oil in.

Squeeze bulb

One of my favorite things I learned here on the HOW. Put a squeeze bulb made for outboards into the fuel line inbetween the primary filter and where the hose connects to the engine (the lift pump, I believe). Bleeding is much easier because the squeeze bulb pumps fuel much more effectively than the little pump lift lever on the enginge.

a bulb caution

a friend had one of those bulbs on his fuel line, and it collapsed while we were delivering the boat after a race. the only way we could keep the engine running was for one of us to stay below and continually squeeze it while the other drove. closest I've ever come to getting seasick. smelled like diesel for days after that delivery. The moral of the story is: if you use a rubber bulb to augment the lift pump on a diesel, be sure to carry a spare on board.

Tennis Anyone?

Can't take credit for this one, but thanks to whoever first came up with it. Putting a couple of holes on opposite sides of a tennis ball and slipping it over the throttle lever beats any other tensioning device. No more bungy cords or constant adjustment of the cable tensioner. Scott. 83-H34 Island Hops

Turkey #2

For those of us with the old kero stoves, using a turkey baster to fill the pre-heat cups with alcohol works. Less spillage than any other method I could come up with. Scott 83-H34 Island Hops
