Catalina 380 Nyack
After looking and having a few surveyed, we finally took possession of our Catalina 380 2 weeks ago. The boat had just been launched and had not really been set up. But it was in great shape and was a good buy for us. Spent the first weekend on board cleaning, setting her up etc and then sailed down from north of Boston to Nyack, NY, taking a week to do so. Motoring, motorsailing, and sailing.

First issue, during mast tuning, was that the backstay seems too long. The mast has a slight forward bend from the upper spreader upwards. Backstay turnbuckles are at their limit. Someone else mentioned this issue on the C380 site.

Second issue was that the water heater has a slight leak from the engine side to the fresh side. Have already ordered a new one.

Boat was a big step up from the C&C 29MkII we had before. But, other than docking (which is terrifying right now), we are very comfortable with the handling.

Congrats on your purchase! a little hint on docking
Mesure your slip and recreate it out in more open water with anchor bouys and the like , practice where theres nothing to hit lol and figure out your boats little tricks, also i know its money but if not eqquiped a bow thruster makes all the difference :)

Well, we are now into ownership for one month. On cleaning out the rear lazarettes this weekend, I decided to actually get into them and really poke around. The autohelm seemed aweful loose, so I laid down and wriggled aft - the large pin holding the fixed end of the hydraulic unit didn't have any cotter pins in it and had wiggled 2/3 of the way out. What a find - could have been nasty. Now I'm wondering if the forestay is securely pinned - next project; disassemble the roller furling drum. Have never had roller furling before, but it looks do-able.
