Good news is you should find access to the other Yanmar 3JH3E 40 hp engine components pretty reasonable on the 2005 Hunter 38 assuming same layout as the 2004 Hunter 386. 14 year life for a seawater pump seems pretty good. At some point you will need to consider replacing the seawater pump for preventative maintenance (PM). I just had a Yanmar diesel mechanic perform an inspection and PM, including seawater pump impeller replacement, on my 2005 Hunter 46 Yanmar 4JH3-TE 76 hp engine. Fortunately there were disproportionate access issues.

Given your admitted lack of big boats experience, you may want to look for an open water school. Hunter may be a good first place to inquire. I'm sure that your insurance company would also appreciate . Also, the greater Annapolis area has got to offer a multitude of learning options..

I have looked into the schools. Some can be pretty pricey. Especially the ones in Annapolis. I'm hoping once I meet the sailing community I'll be able to get out on some boats as crew and get more experience. I'm in no hurry. I may be retiring but I'm only 58 and in good shape.

You may want to see about joining a yacht club. They are not necessarily loaded with affluent stuffy shirts. There may be a fit for you... Many offer sailing lessons from opti thru J's and up thru pocket cruisers.
Also, as previously mentioned... contact Hunter. Most builders offers a " delivery " course. Granted you are not taking possession of a brand new boat, but it wouldn't hurt to ask them...

All good suggestions. We've already visited a couple of clubs as well. We got some good information but I don't remember most of it because I left the clubs with a bit of a buzz. It seams those folks like to tip a few cocktails. I had no idea sailors liked to drink like that ! (wink wink, nudge nudge)
