Oday 22 Up
I am essentially new to sailing the admiral and i purchased a 1973 22 last year locally after sailing a few times with a friend .The previous owner took us out for an hour or so and we spent much of last summer on the bay having fun and trying to figure out this sailing thing somewhere along the way we got hooked and I guess theres no turning back now.:)
We live in the UP of Michigan and sail on Keewenaw Bay on Lake Superior as often as possible being new to sailing I am certain I will have lots of questions in the future and figured I should say hello before I start . Ive been nosing around the forums here for a month or so now and have learned a great deal from the threads I have read and also learned that I have a lot to learn:D Thanks in advance for answering any questions and thanks for all the great information already here .

Heres a pic of the old girl getting ready to go in the water last week. The admiral named her Dragonfly but we havent made it official yet.

Nice looking boat.

I'm in the same boat (so to speak). My wife and I picked up our 22 back in December. Many years since I had sailed. Lots of great advice on this site.

Enjoy

hello

I too am new owner of a sailboat... I won my Mac25 at a charity auction ... I have been working on it since I got it last November... I have not sailed in over 16 yrs... but I have a friend who sails 3 or 4 times a week and I go sail with him.... I am getting back into practice on his boat.... I will be launching my boat this weekend for the 1st time....that is if it stops raining here...

welcome to the sailing family.... be patient with everything you do with your boat... ask lots of questions on the forum here... there is a world of experience and knowledge here to draw upon.. the only dumb question is the one you do not ask and need the answer for...

happy sailing and best wishes to you and your admiral...

sincerely
Jess

Good sailing with your 1973 Oday, I also obtained a 1973 Oday a little while back both boat and trailer need a good going over, but all in all not a bad little sailboat. like yours I've seen a few 1973's with a yellow hull, but I've yet to see another yellow deck like the one I came across.

Thanks for the replies guys:) Time for the first question how do you guys run your jib sheet lines to the cockpit ? Are they inside or outside of the shrouds ? The original rigging manual that came with the boat shows them inside the shrouds through a single block near aft side of cabin I have this block but also have travelers with shaeffer spring blocks on them on each side of cockpit which really seem pointless if i go through the block by the cabin. If I use just the travelers the sheets get tangled on the halyard cleats on the mast so that doesn't work well either. If I run inside the shrouds and jib is let out on a run lines rub on shrouds, outside the shrouds they rub when hauled in tight. The lifelines also seem to cause problems depending which way the sheets are ran. Any thoughts would be helpful.
I saw the previous owner the other day and He gave me another sail for the old girl this one is a big genoa. I haven't tried it out yet since the weather hasn't been great but I'm sure this will raise some more questions
Terrence I haven't seen one with a yellow deck either that is definitely different I like it. In the pic it almost looks like you have storage under the port cockpit seat as well ?

Thanks in advance for the help hope you all have good weather and great sailing .

hello

the jib sheets run inside your shrouds to the block on your cabin top.... the genoa sheets run outside your shrouds to the jib cars on the T-track... the genoa is used during light winds... the jib will be better in med to heavy winds... the jib will turn/point your boat faster than the genoa will.... if you get into the marina races, the jib is what you will fly the most... the genoa is for calm days and relaxing/cruising sailing.... does your mainsail have reefing points on it ?....

I have set up my Mac25 for solo sailing.... all my ropes for sails and mast come to the cockpit, so I can do everything and never have to leave the cockpit.... I have both a jib and a genoa, and I have set it up so I can use both at the same time, for wing on wing downwind runs... my mainsail has 2 reefing points for bad weather sailing, if I get caught out in it....

happy sailing and welcome to the sailing family

sincerely

Jes I would like to see pics of your set up as well I guess with how big my genoa looks it may make sense for those cars to be alongside the cockpit like they are I will definitely be trying it out if we ever get better weather here . I can reef my main by rolling it around the boom the boom pulls back and rotates.
Donnie it looks like u have a different mast on your boat ? Yours looks to be in better shape than mine but very similar nice looking boat. I was stationed at Cherry point 20 some years ago really liked that area.

ODAY 22 LAKE ONTARIO, NY
Congratulations on your new boat. I also have a 1973 Oday22, this will be my 4th season in my 22. I sail her on Lake Ontario out of little Sodus Bay and have had her on the big lake in 20kt winds. It is a nice sailing boat in those winds and 12-15kt winds seem to be her sweet spot. Enjoy your boat, fair winds..

Ditto on the fine sailing quality of the 73 oday 22. Its an very forgiving boat yet capable. It will not point very high but that's the price of a shoal keel. Enjoy.
