I am new to sailing and just made my first trip in a 1988 18.5 Hunter. I do not know many of the sailors' terms, so bare with me. I was a little concerned about how much the Hunter can lean without turning over. I had some people tell me you can not turn over a sailboat with a fixed keel. Can an 18.5 Hunter with a fixed winged keel turn over? Any help would be appreciated. Al Zara

I SAIL A HUNTER 18.5 AND HAVE HAD IT ON A HEEL OF 30-32 DEGREES AND HAD NO PROBLEM WITH KEEPING IT UP. ANY FIXED KEEL BOAT WILL GO OVER GIVEN THE RIGHT WIND CONDITIONS AND A VERY LARGE WAVE HITTING BROADSIDES...BUT YOU SHOULD NOT BE OUT IN A 18.5 UNDER THOSE CONDITIONS

Welcome

Hi Al, I'm from New Orleans, moved to Austin in 1998 and began crewing last summer. I bought my 1983 Hunter 22 in November of '99 and am feeling pretty good about things. I've always had the same concerns about "tipping over". My sailing buddy says "relax, sherry -- the Hunter can handle it." There have been moments I wish I was back in New Orleans, with my boat, so I could sail in open waters. Would love to hear about your recent trip. My email: smiller@brobeck.com
