Here's my question. I'm looking for a trailer able sail boat to go from long beach to Catalina and spend the weekend. I have experience on the ocean just not in a sail boat. I was looking at a macgregor 26 d model for the job. Will this workout in good to moderate ocean conditions? Is there anything I should know about them.

Any help would be great thanks

Just to let you know I sailed on venture 25' over 30 years ago and I went from Newport to Catalina I had to motor all the way their but on the way back it was a clear night and a real good wind all the way to Santa Monica and then back down to Newport. Now the dumb things that I did was I had no ocean exp. and no training of any kind I also did not have a ship to shore radio or any kind of signaling device. I have slept on a 25' venture and I enjoyed all of it, I am sure your boat will be fine, and I read where a guy sailed to S. America on a smaller one, with the right equipment, just don't do what I did with no equipment

I have a 26 D, and would say its up to that challenge.

condition is everything. since your in CA, the daggerboard should not be an issue, and they are typically a little less $ than the later S model.

the thing with all water ballast sailboats is they are tender. or, can be tippy initially. but once you transfer the weight to one side the harden up and sail fine.

the first few times you might be nervous about how much it heels till you get use to it.
