I have a new hunter 27 and am trying to figure out how to set the cars for the jib. I set them to the same "hole" and when on a port tack the sail does not develop the nice shape and power I get on the starboard tack. I was thinking I should measure from the chainplate to the start of the track to determine how far they are off and then use that for a reference. That said I am also confused as to the direction to move the car vs wind speed. Having read both. My final problem is that I have no telltails on the end of my main and have an in-mast furling system. Is it worth putting them on? How do I do it without climbing the mast? If I am not interested in racing and just relaxing cruises with my wife is it all that important in the first place? Thanks for the help.

Measure from the forestay

Measure from the sail track to the forestay on both sides of the boat. On a new boat, I'd check the mast to see if it is centred athwartships. The deck layout is probably fine (controlled by factory), the mast position and tune was done by the dealer and would be the first place to look. Don in the sail trim forum can help with jib lead adjustments. -Randy

Rule of thumb

Move the cars back for heavy wind, to spill. More the cars forward for light wind, to catch. This concludes the short course on cars.
