I just bought a 1976 Mac V-21 and am wondering what to use to hold the tiller on it's pins? The boat, other than having some mold on it, is in really good condition for not having been used since 1999. I pumped out 40 gallons of water from the cabin from it sitting in the rain. The boat came with a 9.9 Evinrude that clears the rudder nicely when the mounting is down. I've never sailed before and hope to get her in the water by next weekend to see if I can chew what I bit off.

There should be a small hole in the TOP pin about 1" below the top. When you line up the two pins and drop them into the holes just put a cotter type key through the hole. Novelman

Contrats on your new V-21.

Yeah, what novelman said. I use an old stainless steel screw left over from re-varnishing the woodwork to hold the rudder in place. I keep all old stainless hardware, and I don't like cotter pins, because the always break. So I use a stainless machine screw and nut. Works fine for me. If you notice an empty hole toward the front of the rudder, resist the temptation to put a bolt in it. It's for a plastic screw that can break-away if you hit bottom - Personal lesson for me there. .-=gp=-.

Now it's legal!

Got her registered and stepped the mast and rigging in the driveway yesterday. Still haven't bent the sails on yet though. I was hoping to get her in the water for the first time this weekend but the weather is turning on me.

Got 'r done!

I went to a local marina and found a boat with much the same rigging as mine, went home and rigged her up. It worked ok on the water but seemed to limit my main travel some. I might try some other variations until I find one I like.

V-21 Hole in Rudder

I too have just "rescued" a 1970 V-21. I wonder about the Rudder. There is a bolt that keeps the rudder fully extended. When removed, the bottom of the rudder swings aft. Replacing the bolt holds it in that position. But, what use is the hole in the front of the lower part of the rudder? You mentioned a plastic bolt in case of running aground. I'm not understanding how that works. Advice, please. Thanks.
