Hunter 31 (1983) Pompano Beach FL
First replacement sail just arrived for my 1983 Hunter 31.

Ulman Main Sail.

Measurements are:

Luff 34' 5"
Leach 35' 10"
Foot 9' 10"

Besides it not coming with the battens, (I missed that omissions in the ad online), and a little staining, it looks much better than the rotten original I took off. (see picture below)

I had a hard time finding one I could afford that was a good match for this boat. What do you think? Did I choose a good one?

Looking at your old one, anything would be an improvement :) Did you choose a good one?. Depends on what you paid. Will your old battens fit the pockets of your new one?

New one was $150. Which I thought was a great deal.

I am going to check the battens after work today.

You should have seen it after we took it off. The whole head, and leach edge of the sail crumbled in my hands. PO had lost his sail cover, and had still been leaving the main on the mast. UV killed it.

hello all

I bought used sails for my 1967 Kittiwake 23.... and I had to have the main altered to fit properly.... but I bought the main, jib, and genoa for $250... they were brand new.... I got lucky on that.... the owner ordered and bought his new sails, then while he was waiting for them to arrive, he had his boat pulled for maintenance.... while it was on the crane, a sling slipped and dropped his boat... rammed the keel up through the bottom of the boat, and destroyed it... insurance bought him a new boat... so he sold these sails cheep.. I was lucky enough to get them....

there are deals out there for everything, you just have to be patient and do a lot of looking...

your sail looks great.... your boat does too....

I used a soft bristle brush and oxy-clean on my sails when i clean them....

sincerely
Jess

The picture of your old main is the most disturbing thing I have seen in along time. ;^)

You did well to swap it out. The 'new' one looks better. At least looks.

One thing to remember about used mains. Unlike genoas or spinnakers that often get sold in good condition because they were never used or where not the ideal size, dacron mains are often left up until someone cannot stand the shape. Then you buy someone else problem.

Every now and then you get a story like Jess's. That sounds like a great deal.
