Thanks for your help on the water leaks question...I went ahead with the purchase of the boat and have been looking her over even more closely today. Better shape than I thought, more "stuff" works than I expected and after having done it once we rigged on trailer in less than 30 minutes with no physical or emotional "excitement". So I think we will be very happy with the boat. Been out of sailing for five or so years and sailed dingys before.

My rub rail has been caulked on top(i dont know if it is the right stuff or not). Looks bad and is coming loose in places. Additionally, my rub rail is wrecked in two places less than one foot long. Can rub rail be replaced in pieces? I don't want to do the whole thing. I could make it so that it wouldn't leak (if it leaks there) with fiberglass but it wouldn't be much of a rub rail. Suggestions? I dont think that this boat will ever be a show boat and I intend to sail it, not be a slave to its vanity so practical ideas are welcomed even if they aren't the prettiest.

Are there any suggestions on recaulking the top of the rub rail?

Thanks, this is a great forum. I likely wouldn't have bought this boat without the forum.

Sealing rub rail and fittings

I had some leakage along the rub rail on my 26D, I removed all the rubber worm (silicone) that the PO's used to seal it. After cleaning everything I used 3M 101, so far it seems to be doing its job (6 months so far). Also seal all the chain plates. I don't know if 101 is the best to use. I figured that the flexibility of it would be an added plus. Hope this helps...

Fair winds to you and hope this helps.

Rubrail sealing

If you remove the rubrail take the opportunity to reseal and tighten the deck-hull joint. It is a major source of water leakage into the boat. As for rubrail sealing, mine is not sealed and I think it is designed to fit over the deck-hull joint without sealing. The downside is that it collects dust and debris.
