We have just purchased a Hunter 42 Passage in Mallorca. The survey was'nt too clever but we bought anyway, hope we are right! Can somebody help with a couple of points? The pushpit screw has pulled out on the starboard side where it screws into the transom. Is this a bolt and if so how do I get to the nut. If not any ideas how to fix it? The second problem is with the Z-Spars in mast furling. The mast has an aft bend starting between the 2 sets of aft swept spreaders. This bend is probably the cause for the sail (Hood) being VERY hard to unfurl and refurl (this is the main reason the surveyor did'nt like the boat). I must say our previous boat's mast, also inmast, was dead straight. Last thing, the LPG system was condemed as at is rubber (not copper) and there is nodrain in the storage locker.

A What?

We have the P42 also. What is a pushpit screw?? we have in mast furling by Zspar. NO problem taking it in and out. Straighten that mast out. there is no reason to have aft bend on this boat. On the propane, rubber hose is OK but you have to have tank in a sealed box with overboard vents. West marine or any of the catelogs sell the boxes. Dont use propane until you make it safe in a sealed box. You will blow up, otherwise

Good Boat

I don't think you will be sorry about buying the 42. We have had ours now for 2 years and have been very happy with it. All Hunters with the swept back spreaders have the prebend in the mast. The rig is pretty strong as we found out this last weekend. The yard was moving our 42 and broke the backstay. We didn't lose the mast which from what we were told would of happened if we had a regular mast. In the US they don't use copper on a boat or I have never see it. The rubber hose will work fine. I was really surprised that the locker was not vented overboard but if not you will need to do it. Also the gas should not be able to leak into the boat. I don't know what bolt you are talking about so I can't help you with that one. If you have any questions just ask. I have done alot of work to our 42. We liveaboard had have made many mods.

Well maybe....

someone converted from CNG to LPG and didn't bother with the overboard vent? I have never seen copper tubing on a boat either. The rubber is fine as long as it is designed to handle LPG. What year 42 is it? Does it have a Solenoid at the LPG tank?

LPG Locker Drain Location

Just to add a little clarification to the vent drain comments. The vent drain location for the LPG tank locker should be in the lowest point of the locker and the vent drain should go overboard, probably without a loop (my guess) at a low point so water doesn't collect to block the draining.

The fuel line for LPG can be hose or copper tubing. But both must meet the American Boat And Yacht Council section A-1.10. Contact ABYC, they are on the net, for complete info.

Gas Problem Thought

If the P-42 is an older unit, it may have an "LNG" system. Many have been converted to LPG. Rubber or copper are OK as noted, but no vent is needed on the LNG as it is lighter than air and will go through the top of the storage hatch with no problems.... Dick

thanks for all the help. I have looked at a couple of 42's in england and now know how the gas container is drained. Copper gas pipe is required for LPG in europe. I have a rigger looking to straighten the Z-SPARS mast. I fly out to the boat in Mallorca (in the Mediteranean)on friday. May be back in touch.
