Got a new tiller. 4 questions. Notice the 1/8 inch gaps around the sides. Do I need to address this ? (Spacers?) notice the gap on the back. Should I round off the butt of the tiller to get it snug ? 3rd question should I mount flush on top, center or flush on bottom? The old one was centered. Last question..when I drill the holes in the new tiller do I need to seal them before assembly? Thanks

I’ll provide the answer to my post in case others need the info. You can’t install a new tiller properly unless you check the fit ON THE BOAT. The angle of attachment on the bracket matters significantly and the only way you will know is to have the tiller hardware in place on the rudder post on the boat to see what angle you need. I did the install off the boat just by squaring up the bracket on the tiller and my tiller was a foot higher than I wanted it. Yes a full foot, it wasn’t even close. So I needed to fill the first holes with epoxy and redrill new holes. The second time I checked my fitting ON THE BOAT to get the holes right. Now it’s good.

The carpenter’s mantra “Measure twice,” might also apply to tiller installation fitting.

Test install twice, drill once!
