New Strange behavior from my MD 6A

Vega Friends,

I'm sorry to inflict yet another Volvo Diesel question on the group
but there you are. A few days ago my MD 6A sputtered to a halt after
running with no sign of trouble for almost three hours. I eventually
figured out the problem which caused the stoppage which turned out to
be a disconnect in the throttle linkage. That was easy enough to fix.
The mystery, however, is that I cannot turn the motor over now. It
acts as if it is seized but I'm sure it isn't. There is lots of
engine oil. No sign of over heating when it was running. Do diesels
sometimes get caught between compression strokes or something? The
starter will not budge it with the compression handle in either up or
down position nor can I move it with the crank. Is this situation
familiar to anyone? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Garry,
If it wasn't for the "sputtering" to a halt, as a first step I would have suggested checking to see if you have picked up a lobster trap line (wrapped around the prop). Always a hazard in Florida waters and sure to "freeze" up the engine. Frank Gallardo V-2184, Cin Cin

Frank,

In the waters around here (Canadian west coast) it's the crab traps
that are out to get you. But in this case, it was the failure of the
throttle linkage that caused the initial stoppage.

I had this happen to my volvo shortly after I bought
the boat,
Was serviced by professionals whilst being
re-commissioned in the local yard, ran sweetly for 4
hours on the homewards trip, worked on the next trip
out. Turned it off as expected after a couple of
hours. It never started again.
Big mick broke the starting handle spindle off the
crank shaft trying to turn it over.
In the end I invested in a Beta and that behaves like
a dream.
I sold the lump for scrap and was hoping to find ut
from the buyer what the final diagnosis was but I
think he just scrapped the engine block after
scavenging the parts.
