I hooked up a new stereo this weekend and now it seems that the breaker on the panel hums like a high voltage power line. Any ideas/suggestions?

Was the new stereo the same model (eg Sony) as the past one? Are you sure it is wired correctly? Grounded?

The only thing I can think of and I have seen/heard this before was the device was drawing current almost equal to that of the breaker rating.

You may want to hook up an amp meter between the breaker and the stereo to see what the current draw is.

It might also be a breaker that is bad or going bad.

Good Luck

Breaker

Thanks for your ideas. The new stereo is a different make and about 10 years newer than the old one and I thought about the difference in power usage but wasn't sure. I thought if it drew too much power that the breaker would "break". I will try replacing it with a new one.

I am pretty sure it's wired correctly as the stereo works just fine.

Seems that a stereo shouldn't draw anywhere near the limit for a breaker (usually 5A or more). Unless there are too many devices powered through the one breaker. Another thought.... if you can hear the buzzing sound through the stereo it might be the battery charger interfering with the stereo. We experienced that.

Hey Ron,
You may be right, but would that be the case if the prior radio didn't interfere with the battery charger?

I wonder if the installation was correct or if, for some reason, the radio is not grounded.

put the meter on this thing and see what is going on...

Hhmmm... I wonder if the 'always-on' lead is fed from a different battery than the radio's breaker is, and maybe a difference in voltage is somehow back-feeding? Otherwise, short across the breaker to bypass it, and/or replace it. the "other Ron"

Radio/Battery Charger it was

It was the battery charger...but what causes it and is there a fix?
