I put a new sole in my 8.0c last fall. I thought some pictures might help others know what is under there. I completely removed it. Cleaned it all out. Put a large support under the post (12x17x2 laminated marine plywood epoxy and glassed). The original support under post was only under ½ of the post and was only 1” thick. Then I cut ½” marine plywood to shape and glassed both sides with 2 layers of 9 oz glass and installed attaching lips to one end (see photos). To install, I poured 2 pound pouring foam, put the piece in place and weighted it down with cement blocks and let the pouring foam expand out the unfinished section. The foam is so sticky, you cannot lift or move the piece after the foam dries. Then I did the next section the same way. When I put a new section in, I used 1 ¼ inch SS screws through top of new section into the attaching lip of the previous section. I completed it over 5 days, putting one section in per day. With the pouring foam under the entire floor, it is rock solid. With the foam, I don’t believe condensation will be an issue. Also there is no place under the sole where water can collect. (no voids). This spring, I will lay 2 more layers of glass over the entire sole and onto the hull up to the bottom of the cabinets. I am hoping this will give me a nice clean finish. After that, I plan to paint it with KIWIGRIP non-skid paint.

I think it might have been. I bought it this way. I got it and trailer for almost nothing. It has been a real project, (2 ½ years) but I have really enjoyed it and I am doing it exactly the way I want it. Hope to put it in the water later this summer.

Wow...good job. Did you leave a path for water to drain to your bilge pump?

About the number one cause of stringer structural failure is lack of proper or blocked limber holes to allow water to drain to the bilge pump.

Water will get under it somehow, someday. Its relentless that way.

Thanks for the photos. Last year I did some exploring thinking I had rot under my compression post. I cut out a square and found the same thing as you did... the post rested on only half the block. Strange design.

It all looked solid so I put the plug back in and sealed it up for now.

What hull number is yours? Mine is 196.

Klemsaba - Is the round stuff in your picture the actual lead ballast? Mine ballast is covered with a foam type material.

That's what I assume it is which matches the description on how other S2 keels are constructed.
