Has anyone ever replaced their swing keel winch handle with one from Catalina Direct? I ordered one, and it came with a new "hub" (the part attached to the winch drive that the handle slips over). The new one has two setscrews to secure it to the threaded drive shaft. My problem is, the original hub does not have these setscrews, at least not that I can see. Immediately behind the winch frame is a pulley that is flush against the backside of the frame, so I don't think it can have setscrews there. To install the new one, it appears I need to secure the drum so that it cannot turn, and unthread the old handle hub, then thread the new hub on. But does it mount such that the two setscrews are OUTSIDE the winch frame? That's the only way I can see the new hub working. Thanks for any suggestions from anyone who has done this swap. Jack

Call Catalina Direct

If you have not already done so. They have tech support people that should be able to sort this out. Some of the Catalina Direct items are not good replacements to the original parts, but perhaps they can walk you thru how this handled installs versus the original part. Also, you may just want to get the entire winch (with handle). I believe that it is a Fulton 1,000 lb "Working Winch". Regards, Ted

Tried that

I spoke with Catalina Direct's Tech Support yesterday. The tech was surprised that the existing winch does not have setscrews securing the winch hub. His only suggestion was to find a way to secure the drive shaft so that it cannot turn, then use the winch handle to unscrew the hub. I've tried this a couple of times with no success. I'm thinking I may have to remove the winch to accomplish this. So, I'm still open to ideas from anyone who has done this. I'm hoping for a way to remove the hub without having to remove the winch assembly, if possible. If it's helpful, the winch is a Milwaukee Fulton K1500. Jack

Catalina 22 Replacement Winch Handle

Cactus Jack: I assume you are replacing the winch handle because you do not have the old one. I also assume you are using Catalina Direct Product no. E1274 for a replacement handle. Please see the link below for the item I am mentioning. https://www.catalinadirect.com/store/moreinfo.cfm?Product_ID=10428 The replacement handel has two parts. There is a "hub" part that should have a hole with threads on one end with the two set screws, and the other with a relief that sets into the base of the handle so the handle is easily placed onto the winch and then just as easily removed. The "hub" does indeed have two set screws. However, as mentioned, it should also have threads so that it can be threaded onto the threaded stud on the winch that enters the cabin. I think all you need do is screw the hub onto the threaded stud that sticks out from the winch. From there, you might use the set screws, but I do not think it will be necessary. I think those set screws are for a newer winch that does not have a threaded stud, but rather is smooth with one side flat which would then make it readily accept the set screws. Following, the handle will easily sit onto the relief of the hub. I am basing my statements primarily on the picture of the replacement handle seen in the link below.

Yes...

Bayard - Yes, that is the winch handle I purchased, but not because I don't have the original. The original is rather worn at the hub and inside the handle where it slides over the hub, resulting in the handle easily "popping" off the hub while cranking. My main problem is not with how to install the new hub, but rather with how to remove the old one. As I mentioned, I see no setscrews, and my attempts at holding the drive shaft from turning while unscrewing the hub have not worked. I called Fulton Milwaukee, but they couldn't help either because this winch has been out of production for so long, no one there is familiar with it. I guess the only thing I can do is to remove the winch from the boat, where I can more easily get at the drive shaft and maybe clamp it with vise grips. Any other ideas welcome! Jack
