After reading positive comments here about lee sails I contacted them , a price for a new main for my h23 was roughly 550 ,a fully battened main was 850 , is this normal to have such a big difference?, , does anyone have experience with full batten mains on an h23, ? do I need anything in attition to what I already have for a full batten main, mostly we cruise , some people on this web site got me involved in racing, , I could almost have a new jib for the price of the full batten main versus the partially battned, , thanks for all of the input, Mike B

The cost of racing

Battens let you increase the roach of the sail so that you main can be bigger. They also increase chafe downwind. And the ends of the batten pockets are likely to be the first things you have to repair. They make the sail harder to raise and lower, but they make the sail easier to fold on the boom. It is not quite twice as much work to put in full battens on a sail so naturally they cost more. If you race you boat in class races with other H23's, make sure your new sail will be class legal.

Chafe Protection

If you bought a sail from a local loft they'd include chafe protection for the spreaders. If you take your new Lee sail to a local loft and ask them what it would cost to install the chafe protection they probably won't be very happy about giving a quite. Maybe you can buy the fabric separately and add it yourself after you get the sail? With regard to full battens or not, my old sail had regular battens and my new sail has full battens. Comparing the two, the full batten keeps a really nice shape especially on the leach. Roach? I don't know if the new sail has more or not, I suspect it does, but one thing I do know it it hangs up on the backstay in light air when tacking. I need to either pull up on the backstay or push on the boom when tacking in light air. In moderate or heavy air there's no problem. I'd recommend the full-batten sail in spite of the extra cost.
