New Sails for Katia Sofia

This is in the nature of wild boasting, but this weekend I bent on
the first new sails of my life. . .Katia Sofia (used to be Lyra)got
her new suit (main and 115% jib) from Air Force sails, who are
affiliated with Sailnet.com. They are beautifully made and were very
reasonably priced. The main is non-standard, with two full length
battens in the top of the sail which make me feel like an oversized
sailboard when I look up. . .the increase in roach is startling and
the leech of the sail just misses the backstay now by perhaps an inch
and a half. I only got one day's sailing out of the weekend (it took
half a day to get everything swapped out) and it was too brisk for
the full main. I ended up sailing with one (of the three) reefs
pulled down and the jib partly rolled up most of the time. . .let the
whole jib out for a bit at the end. . .so really I haven't had much
chance to compare performance. My impression is that she points a
good bit higher and keeps moving grin. . .but then. . .that's what
I'd been hoping for. Anyway, those of you who have become accustomed
to seeing us flying baggy patched and rusty sails are in for a
shock. These are WHITE.
Tickled in Seattle. . .

Ken,
Congrats on the new sails. I'm jealous!! You mentioned the sail are
non-standard. I've been thinking about new sails to replace the
tired, dirty sail on "Overture" and was interested in the specs of
your new sails. Are they crosscut Dacron or laminate? I was surprised
to see the 115% genoa. Why so small?

Well done on the new sails, they will make a load of difference. Careful that
you keep within the one-design rule if you ever intend to race (friendly or
competitive) with the sail shape and area. Fully Battened mainsails were
allowed withion VODA after about 1992 but not sure with a larger roach..

Person to ask is Lars Lemby in Sweden (lars@...)
