Our Catalina 27 needs its standing rigging replaced. The previous owner raced the boat but we are new to sailing and just plan to daysail and cruise aboard her. I don't have the skills yet to replace everything myself so we will hire the job. How can I tell that the job was done correctly and that the rig is tuned properly for the type of sailing we want to do? Does the rigger traditionally go out with us for a fine-tuning? Even then, what should I be looking for?

Kathy The answer to your question is long and complicated. The simple answer is: depending on what deal you made with the installer. If you asked for and paid for a rig tuning, then you should get it. Sometimes riggers think their clients want to do it themselves. Your boat, your deal. But even if or when the rigger does his tuning, the shrouds are going to stretch. Then it's all up to you. In any event, buy Brian's book, The Riggers Apprentice. Has everything you'll ever need to know. The type of sailing you do has nothing to do with rig tuning. Either it's right or not. Many of the questions you are bound to ask as a new sailor can be started here, but you are really going to have to do a lot of research and homework on your own and build a good library of sailing books of those things that interest you. Welcome aboard, Stu
