I am looking for some sort of "stop" to put into the mast to keep the main sail slides from droping out when the mast is lowerd. right noe I'm using riggers tape. Also, I cant figure out how to reef my main. I have one reefing point. Any help or refrence material would be appreciated.

sail stops

Most sailboat shops sell both internal (the slide goes inside the mast) and external sail stops (the stop slides on the external sail track). Both are slid onto/into the mast slide and tightened by hand with a knurled nut. I keep mine in for all the days I am sailing, including overnight. But you do need to remove it when slab reefing. A commercial slug stop will work...

But a velcro tie around the mast requirea less friggin'.

Catalina Island

Novelman, I've enjoyed your helpful posts on this forum. We have friends who sail out of Newport Beach. They long to sail out and overnight on Catalina Island. My question is: do you have knowledge on the bays there and what the anchoring/docking facilities are like? As well, can you advise on the local rules for overnighting there? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Wife and I are long time sailors but have never sailed the West Coast nor been out to the Island. Friends are fairly new to sailing and a little bashful toward heading out there as newbies. If you would rather, I'll send you my home email for a private message. Regards, Steve Paul

thank you

Scott, thank you for this excellent brochure. You guys are great as always. Looks like a great weekend. We plan to do this later in the year. What does the weather do around late October or November? You see back here in Indiana we pull our boats around that time or fire up the bubble machines to keep them from freezing up in the water. Steve P.

Oct/Nov Weather

The weather here in SoCal can be very nice in Oct/Nov. The only thing to watch out for are our dreaded "Santa Anna" winds. These can blow 40 knots and turn Catalina's harbors into death traps. Pick up Brian Fagan's excellent crusing guide to Central and Southern California for a ton of information on Catalina and our weather patterns.
