Is it me; or are the Doyle prices on the HOW sail loft/chandlery WAY higher than Sail Warehouse and others?

Just looking for a reality check here.

Yes they're higher, but the sails are better. A Lexus costs more than a Chevy, too.

JC: When you need to get a real price on a sail you really need to get apples to apples comparisons. Just because someone quoted you 7.3 oz cloth, does not indicate that it is the SAME cloth. Then we need to consider the hardware, thread and sewing quality. Once you start making any modifications to these "off the shelf" sails their prices are much closer in price.

Yes, they are cheaper, but how often do most of us purchase sails. If you get 5-6 years from a $1200 sail or 10-12 years from a $1500 sail, we both know which one was a better buy and which one was cheaper.

Curious JC2, about your question. Hardly anyone here has more years around sails than you. You obviously know about quality. So are you saying SBO Doyles cost more than Sail Warehouse Doyles?

Hi Ed,

I believe we're the only source for Doyle sails other than the Doyle lofts and of course, the builders who provide them with their boats. If I remember correctly, SW sells Rolly Tasker or a similar offshore sail. They are typically less expensive than Doyle, North, UK, and other domestic lofts.

That's what I thought Phil. And the reason I asked JC the question. I don't understand why he would compare Doyle to offshore on price.

I have a related question. After a year, I still have quite a lot to learn about my 1981 H30. The boat has what I believe to be original sails, although they were refurbished at some time in the past. The jib should be replaced, but I'm not sure about the main. Other than the obvious (rips, etc), what are the signs that a main should be replaced? The boat still goes when I put the sail up, but would it would go faster with a new sail and the same captain?

Andy: If you have the original sails, that is one hell of a long time for a sail to last. Typically the sail gets baggy and the boat will heal excessively and preformance will suffer.

What will probably happen is your sail will tear and your engine will crap out in 20kts wind and you are about 300 yards off of a lee shore.

I got about 10 years out of the main on our H'31. I was suprised how much better the boat sailed with a new sail.

PS: The above senario will happen on June 15th and it will take you about 6-8 weeks to get a new one (end of the sailing season). <g>

As a sail ages, it gets baggier and the draft moves aft. It gets to the point that haliard tension, cunningham tension etc. is not enough to pull the draft back forward in a breeze and if the wind dies you end up with large wrinkles down the luff. New sails will improve pointing and decrease weather helm significantly. Just because the material appears strong and good, it doesn't mean the shape hasn't changed.
