s2 8.0 mid Branson
I have just traded for an 8.0 mid (serial # SSU27129M76G) with a deep draft (4 feet) and on the original trailer .... The Bill of lading shows a delivery date of March of 1976 ..... It has an MD6A Volvo diesel (serial #4823)

The boat is in a state of disrepair / neglect and has many issues that I will need to deal with and I hope some of you might share your advice and wisdom with me .... (Thanks in advance for your help!)

First of all, what is the difference between the various models? (8.0 a, b, c, Mid, Aft etc.) My boat has an aft cabin - don't they all?

I am going to need to find all sorts of parts and gear as many things are missing or damaged, the cushions are gone, the sails are gone, the bow pulpit was smashed by a falling mast (I think), The diesel will need to be serviced as well as new packing/seals in the propeller shaft, and all the rest I haven't thought of yet.

The boat has never been in saltwater, does this mean I might be able to use the original shrouds/stays?

How do these boats sail? Can they point at all? (Sail to weather) It really looks like a floating RV with the tremendous freeboard ....

People seem to write that these can be classed as bluewater boats, can they take heavy seas and high winds?

Thanks again! .... Jeff

the A model is a rear/aft cockpit and the C model is a center/mid ship model ....as for parts the thing you will find is the hull was made by S2 and all the components are from various suppliers and manufactures.....theses are good boats .......welcome to the forum

the stays and shrouds should be replaced about every 10 years or so as for the blue water thing that is up to the captain and his ability to sail her ...i am told that they are a little tender but when they flop over they get stable and sail very well...hope this helps

Thank you Woody!

You say they sail "Tender"?..... Do you mean that they are hard to hold on course in light winds? I once owned a Bayliner that I could not sail into the wind to save my life, I hope this sails better!!

he means that after initially heeling to 15 degrees quickly the boat will harden up and be less likely to heel further. The 8.0A which you have was the first 8.0. The redesigned 8.0 was designated the 8.0b and it has a more usual long doghouse. There is a center cockpit version of the 8.0b called the 8.0c. S2 didn't make any boat designed for "blue water" a misused term if there ever was one. They make fine coastal cruisers, but unless you have huge skills or balls I'd stay in sight of land or at least within range of a CG helicopter.

I owned a 1976 8.0a ( Ummagumma )for 24 years , just sold it two years ago when a 9.2 came to me . My 8.0 took my family and I ove three of the great lakes including lake St Clair and the Welland Canal . She sailed well in light winds as long there was no powerboat chop . When the wind picked up over 12 kts she sailed very well and over 20 with aq reefed mail and an 80% jib she was sailing on rails . You just have to make sure the rig and sails are balanced .

Thank you Bob and Tom! .... I have always listened to credible advice and will exercise caution as I refit and sail my "new" S2 .... Thank you for the info on the boat also, I looked hard on the internet and never found out about the different versions of the cockpit, is there a site that has all this info? .... Thanks again! .... Hi Trusty, Congrats on the new boat. I bought a 8.0a last April and have been working on her ever since. You can see a lot of my pics if you check for my posts.
There is a lot of good information on following site along with original manuals and broshures. Lots of pics too. http://impliedconsent.us/S2_8.0/S2_8.0.html
You can also find a letter there from S2 addressing lots of questions that they fielded over the years. The letter was written in such a way as to say, this is all we know so dont ask us no more questions but not is a snide way;) I actually got some useful info from it when was resetting my windows.
I haven't sailed mine yet so i can't answer anythign about that yet but soon....
I have learned a lot about the 8.0 since i've been working on it every spare minute i have so i can probably answer lots of questions you might have. Dont hesitate to ask.
Is that the boat in your signature and did that trailer come with it? Post some pics please:)

Thanks for the reply! ..... It sounds like you are a hands on type of guy so you are probably having fun working on the boat!

Yes, the trailer came with the boat but I bought it sight unseen and have not even touched it yet .... Mine is the deep draft - what is yours? .... I have to install new bearings and tires before I drive her from Tulsa to Branson where I live, I will work on her here and then plan a trip to the ocean for some real sailing. I grew up sailing on the west coast but have been away from it for many years - I wonder if it will be as enjoyable as I remember ....

Does yours have an inboard engine? Gas or Diesel? ..... Are you going to use the original sails and rigging or replace them?

Thanks for the link and the offer of advice!

Most of the time I have fun working on it. It gets terrible hot and humid here in south FL in the summer and makes it almost unbearable to do certain things during the heat of the day. Sanding the bottom paint off was horrible. Grinding the carpet backing and glue off in the cabin was not much fun either. Without a fan in there, you could die a horrible death. In August I got tired of working on the inside so moved to the outside and reset all the deck hardware, reset the windows, fixed some soft spots and cleaned up the top side, serviced the winches and install 2 more, etc, etc.
When I got the boat the sail drive and gas tank were gone. I opted to install an electric start extra long shaft 9.9 Evinrude. I glassed the saildrive hole in. all the controls are in the cockpit. The original sails were trash. I since picked up a like new main from Minnie Sails over on the west coast. The sail is from a j-22 which has almost identical main dimensions as the 8.0. I recently ordered a Schaefer Furler Snap Furl and when I have that setup I believe I will order a new 130% head sail.
Mine has the shoal draft which I like. I'll be able to get back into the coves and flats, which are plentiful around here, fairly easy.
In the last few weeks I've gone back to working in the cabin. I recovered the galley with white formica and built/installed a new counter top, refinished and re-installed all the teak trim around it. Currently working on the fresh water plumbing. I had to buy a new water tank because the original aluminum one had a slow leak. This weekend I will install a new faucet and electric pump. I'm debating whether I should install the original Whale foot pump in the system as a backup. Seems to still work ok. Once I get all the galley area completed I believe I will move over to the head - install a new head system with holding tank, macerator and all that goes along with it. I then still have to install flooring, and a complete electrical system. After all that I still have a thousand little things I have to do. I'm hoping to get all the big stuff done during this winter while its cool.
There are some recent pics of her I posted on another thread - http://forums.s2.sailboatowners.com/showthread.php?t=167484
Plenty of other pics if you do a search for my posts.

Sorry for getting long winded.

I like the look of the shoal draft.... Can you still point into the wind with that setup?. You mentioned that you fixed some "Soft spots" - Is this the balsa core deck? - How did you fix the problem?.... I am hoping to go thru the Volvo diesel and use it but I wonder why people talk about the motors "Hydro locking"? ... Thanks for the help! .... Jeff

I haven't sailed it yet but I'll sure let ya know when I do. You'll probably be sailing before me:(
Yes, they were all balsa cored. I fixed several areas which were underneath various pieces of deck hardware like stations and the bow pulpit. Also around the chain plate holes. What I would do is drill holes where they can be hidden by the hardware. I'd dig and vac out whatever I could from the core, let the void dry out for few days and fill with a penetrating epoxy. Make sure you blue tape the underside where the screws or holes came through from the hardware mounts. I'd just keep filling the hole with epoxy until it would not take anymore. Once it hardened, drill out the original holes for the hardware and reset it.
I wasn't doing much today so I created several photo albums of my progress. Take a look through my profile. You can also see where I re-laminated my cabin ceiling.

Jeff, hydro locking is when someone keeps cranking the engine when it won't start and raw water doesn't get expelled from the boat. The raw water system gets full and eventually it backs up into the exhaust manifold areas where water should not be and then enters the cylinders. Once the cylinder is full of water, the engine will not turn over as water is not compressible thus hydro locking it.. Needless to say, if that happens, it needs to be addressed "immediately"..does yours turn over either electrically or by hand?
