I am about to replace a rudder on a 1978 shallow draft Hunter 30. Both the rudder and the skeg that holds the rudder at the bottom were ripped off during one of our recent (2 years ago)hurricanes. My question is has anyone a picture of how the bottom of the rudder fits into the lower part of the skeg and does this lower bracket on the skeg take the weight of the complete rudder.

This is the best picture I have

I do not believe the bottom part of the the skeg takes the entire weight as the rudder hangs on a post. I think most of the weight is taken by the top bracket. s/v Meant to Be '79 Hunter 30'

There is a small stub ( about the size of a finger )at the bottom of the rudder, that fits into a metal lined hole in the skeg ( has a small lip on the top ). On the hard, the skeg holds most of the weight of the rudder. In the water, the rudder floats, so the weight comes off. The top bracket ( in my boat, a wood block ) only keeps the top of the rudder shaft from moving side to side. If I ever have to do it again, I will replace the bottom of the skeg with a bronze rudder shoe, to enable the removal of the rudder without having to remove the whole skeg. Good luck.
