Is there anyone dumber than a sailor dedicated to his/her boat? I just drove 1900 miles to spend three days with Ladylove. Two of those days were twelve hour work-a-thons. The third day was installing a new rudder, launching, bobbing in the middle of the Neuse river when the stuffing box unscrewed itself, and, having lost the GPS and with no charts, trying to find the entrance to Clubfoot Creek ten miles away in zero visibility. Both dumb AND embarrassing! :naughty:
Now she sits alone, all clean and waxed, new bottom-paint, new rudder, and with the “lost” prop reinstalled. You may recall the story of losing the 3-blade folder in the Erie Canal which was posted months ago. The bent rudder and shaft strut are newer stories but now in the history book. If you are ever near the Pamlico Sound I can highly recommend the Sailcraft boatyard. Good workers and the nicest people. Just don’t move the poppits yourself trying to get ahead on painting under them. They do not like that!

New or refurbished?

Hi Ed,
Glad to hear its all coming together. While you're just getting back in the water, I'm only two weekends away from haulout here in Nova Scotia

Did you rebuild/straighten the original rudder or install a new one from Foss?

Fair winds!

"New" H37C rudder detail.

Jim, this boatyard has serious experience. They cut away all of the skin and insides, leaving just the framework. The rudder perimeter is solid glass. They straightened the post and told me there was no corrosion. Another advantage of fresh water(until last July). Then they use a special foam that eliminates voids which they claim is why our rudders delaminated in the first place. Next they build up layers of glass and cloth, almost like the layup in the mold for a new boat. They do not use the old skin that was cut out. Their claim is that it is much stronger and will not take on water like a Foss rudder. I hope that is true. Time will tell.
