I am considering replacing the below-deck roller furler on my 1992 Hunter 33.5 with a single-line above-deck model (probably a Schaefer) and would like to hear comments from anyone who has replace the factory-installed roller furler with another unit. I am particularly interested in learning if putting a unit above deck creates problem with accessing the anchor locker well due to the door hitting the roller furler drum when being opened. If the drum is raised high enough to avoid a problem, I am concerned that the jib will have to be recut and the change in the center of effort of the sail will affect the boat's sailing performance. Any comments?

OK on mine

I relocated my Hood furler from the well to above the deck with no problem.

Mike...

the "Classified Ad of the Week" on the homepage of this site has some pictures of an '89 33.5 that the owner moved and replaced with different make the roller furling. He also installed a windlass, cut the chain locker cover into 2 pieces, and some other mods. You might take a look at those pictures.

Relocating Furler

Steve, Did you simply move the Hood furler drum above deck, or install a new furler? Were any changes required to the boat's anchor locker door to avoid it hitting the drum when it is opened to rmove the anchor? Mike

What is the reason for moving the drum above deck? I have a ProFurl below deck on my 35.5, which is essentially the same boat, and can see no reason to change it. In fact, with the below deck you can carry deck sweeper genoas which perform far better then high foot sails. Also makes for a cleaner looking deck.

Hood furler

I have a Hood 810 continuous line furler that has jammed numerous times this year and will be replacing it with the single line furlable replacement drum next year. Upgrading the drum is much cheaper than replacing the entire unit. The web site that offers the upgrade drum is: http://www.pompanette.com
