New Purchase 1985 Hunter 22 Need help

I just purchased a 22'r

I noticed that the floor of the boat has two rectangular cut-outs . I figured they were for storage but they are solid inserts. Is this normal or has someone back filled these after market?

I have an 85 22 as well and I thought the same, it is the weight to keep the boat upright! :)

I'm still really new to this, I know some boats have a water ballast ours has that for a ballast... :) so yeah good thing to leave in there... Funny I was trying to find more storage as well though!

Yup .. that's about 1300 lbs of lead epoxied into the bottom of the boat (bilge) to lower the center of gravity for boat stability. I like this arrangement much better than placing the lead in the swing keel, as the lead in the bilge arrangement makes it MUCH easier to drop the relatively light weight swing keel for inspections / maintenance.

Finally a non-hernia keel!

You had me lost for a few minutes. I thought you meant the wooden floor. I have a 85 22 hunter with a fixed keel so you kind of threw me for a few seconds. I don't know what my cast iron keel weights but I have heard it is 1400 lbs.

I can't help you much in the barnacle REMOVAL department as, believe it or not, I haven't had to remove any in the past 5 yrs. Those 5 years were on a mooring just off of Long Island Sound.

But when you get back to 'clean hull' condition, I recommend and use an ablative (I don't race) with very good results, specifically:

INTERLUX's ACT WITH SLIME FIGHTER
• Excellent season-to-season protection
• Slime fighter controls weeds, slime and Algae fouling
• Cuprous oxide controls shell fouling - barnacles, zebra mussels, etc.
• Can be used in fresh, salt and brackish water

when removing barnacles, scrape them off while the hull is still wet coming out of the water. IF it dries, it is like removing concrete.
