Just had a new prop, shaft, cut-less. What is your best “plan / product” to put on. Boat is in salt water, all year.

There are lots of products available and they work for awhile. Then they don’t.

The most important step you can take is to make sure you have good zincs on your shaft. For $10 what 2 lattes every 6 months, you can protect you prop from corrosion damage. Then get in that warm Florida water and give it a scrub every 2-3 months.

I asked this same question to the supplier of my new 3 bladed fixed prop I purchased this spring. Olympic Propeller, Anacortes WA, replied that they recommend no paint be applied to new propellers. I did not pose any followup questions as to why.

If I was in the icy waters of Anacortes WA, I agree. If you put bare metal in Florida waters overnight, some critters will start building condos on it.

I used the Pettit prop coat (pictured above) and it helped for a year, with the help of a diver every 60-days.

That's what I think. I've done "cold galvanize". I've done regular bottom paint. I've done nothing. It's all fine until it's not. Mostly, I think using the boat regularly is the best medicine.

Props and Paint... When this shiny boat bling showed up on my door step, I had a gleam in my eye.

I wanted to do everything I could to protect her/it. I read about special paints and ways that they are applied. I consulted everyone I met and received a series of conflicting comments / ideas.

Over the past 5-6 years I have enjoyed the friendship of a professional diver. He slips beneath the waters beside my boat 3-4 times a year. Yesterday we were chatting about props. He took me over to see the reflection of this beauty in the clear water under the boat.
"Don't ever paint it. It is looking great. Use it. I'll keep it shiny as long as you keep buying zincs to protect it from galvanic corrosion."
Paint sloughs off as your prop thrashes against the water. It leaves a disrupted surface that marine creatures use to attach themselves.

It is your boat and your prop. My 2cents are the wisdom of a guy that pulls up the skirts of many boats to rub their bottoms.

Ha...I have heard the same about bare land in South Beach.

Just to close this post, I put a metal primer and an epoxy 2 part primer and called it a day. My boat gets cleaned once a month. Made my decision after talking to a few older than I salts and the water that I am docked in, the manatees love it here.
