I recently purchased an 81 Hunter 30, and would like to improve engine performance. Any recommendations for prop upgrades on this model? Thanks!

CDI 3 blade feathering

I'm on my 2nd season with it and highly recommend it. The biggest challenge is that you're limited to a 13" diameter prop and the 3 blade helps.

You may be expecting the impossible.

This to me is a touchy subject. Owner wants to improve motoring performance. ie motor faster. The response commonly is put a bigger prop or a 3 blade prop or increase pitch and you will motor faster. Often this is incorrect. Now back up a moment. If in fact the boat does not have the correct prop for the boat/engine combination then yes improvement is available. However, if you've got the correct size & pitch two blade prop now changing to a bigger/3-bladed/increased pitch prop is not going to help. It will only overload your engine. The correct prop is the maximum size/pitch combination that your engine can turn. Anything more than that and its overloaded. So... If your hoping to get more speed in flat water by switching to a different prop don't hold your breath. Unless you have the wrong prop now, changing to a 3-Blade for instance is not going to make a significant difference IN FLAT WATER. A 3-Blade will keep the boat moving better in chop or headwinds, but not a calm day in flat water. Keep in mind you are limited by the length of your waterline and the horsepower of your engine. A different prop won't get you past these limitations. What size prop do you have now? If it's a 13 x 9 2-blade it is probably the correct prop for your boat. A 13 x 8 3-Blade will give you an advantage in adverse conditions, but that is about it.

Basically Justin is right, except for...

The exact props: I had fixed 13x13 2 blade and changed to a fixed 13x10 3 blade. They were about right, assuming you have a 1981 Yanmar 2GM and want to achieve around 3200RPM. This is what Michigan Wheel recommends. I've now got a 3 blade CDI feathering which performs similiarly to the 3 blade fixed in forward and is a huge improvement in reverse. All of the props get me to just over 6 knots in flat water which is all you can expect from a 26' waterline. The two blade was slowed much more in head seas. Incidentally, I switched to the latest prop not for motoring but for sailing. The fixed 3 blade was terrible for sailing. A major attraction to the 1981 Hunter 30 tall rig is its sailing performance.
