I am going to replace the Beckson port lights on my O’Day 28’. They are 4” X 10” and the original ones had the little grooves or troughs in the bottom to drain the water. The chandlery where my boat is on the dry and shrink wrapped (they forgot the zipper door for now which is why I am not trying to measure myself) were able to get the entire thing for $100 each.
The problem is when they came in they were the ones without the grooves. According to Becksons web-site these are appropriate for cabin tops with sides that are no more than 15 degrees from vertical. The ones with grooves are okay up to as much as 45 degrees.
Does the O’Day 28 have cabin sides over 15 degrees from vertical? Do I need the same ones as came off? What would be the best way to get an accurate measurement once I can get in there?
Thanks,
Brent

Go with Beckson's "Rain Drain" Ports. The OEM selected these ports for a reason.

'87 O'Day 272 Portlight gaskets

Does anyone know what O'day used for the opening portlights on the '87 O'Day 272? I just purchased the boat and have leaks from both portlights. Also need to rebed the deadlights - anyone know what material/gaskets are used on portlights/deadlights. Opening portlights may need a replacement gasket if available. Deadlights definitely need rebedding...

Thanks

Charles

I haven't been able to find replacement parts for the portlights on Karma either. Concerning the leaking you may want to check out 25yearslater's epic post "And so it begins". He's documented some production issues concerning O'Day's portlight installation techniques, that result in leaking due to distortion of the cabin. The discussion starts around page 15.

Btw, happy new year.

Portlights

SailingCal21 - Are you sure you don't have Beckson portlights? I've just realized my '84 O'day 34 has Beckson 410 bronze (LNZ-410b). I've just ordered a pair to try out. Attached is a photo of one of mine.

SeaBorne - check this link to see if your equipment looks similar:

Thanks for the link, they do look similar. When I last checked, I believe that they were manufactured by a company that went out of business. PK?, I believe. The ones on the Beckson link do look similar however. I could use new gaskets and a few other parts.

Charles, we've redone one deadlight..the most forward on the port side in the main salon...you can order new ones from D & R and also the correct
caulk....DO NOT USE ANY RUN OF THE MILL CAULK...The caulk Rudy will
provide is used by Automobile Windshield installers and is formulated to reatain the seal thru winter and summer as the hull contracts, etc. We had to do it twice as the first time I ignored the Caulk deal and had to buy a 2nd
one because the first one shattered into 1000 pieces right after the first cold spell here in Wichita...The Dow Corning caulk and pre-cut deadlight (s) are
on D & R Marine's website under the 272...I have not changed the beckson
ports yet...our boat is 26 years old and they have never leaked...The 272
should have had the rain drains but did not come from the factory w/the rain drains...good luck....the deadlight installation is an interesting accomplishment.

I also got confused about the rain drain option and figured best get those type cause thats what was there and the Becksons fit perfect......I've been told that the originals were Gray Marine ports and look the same

I just purchase a black beckon for my Oday 28. It's a blem and fits perfectly. It's not a rain drain but for 33 nix it's hard to complain. Best thing I did was fill the void between the liner and hull with great stuff foam.

If the ports are not broken and just glazed over, you can pick up a headlight restoration kit from your local auto parts store and with a couple hours work they can be clear as new. If I recall correctly the kit was less than 20 bucks.

Well, after a 20" rainfall last weekend, I NEED to do something about my leaking Beckson's. I removed all screws on inside, and could not remove the portlight. I removed the exterior smoked cover (through which portlight is set), but didn't have a putty knife to remove. Question - 1) Do I need to remove/rebed smoked glass, and 2) should Beckson come out of cabin side (from inside) with nothing 'captured' outside of cabin? Also advantage of having dogs on top or bottom as the thumbnails included in this thread had one of each? Will also need to rebed deadlights in main cabin as I had approx 1 qt of water under starboard settee. Any advantae to purchasing complete 310 portlight vs ordering replacement screen and gasket? Do I need to rebed with 'special ' caulk, or use butyl tape (lots of discussions on use of butyl tape)?

My O'day 37 had new Beckson port lights installed by the PO. Three or four of the smaller lights leaked. I looked at all the usual suspects with no luck. Finally, on a sunny day, I noticed light shining through where the "water drain channel" nears the groove where the rubber gasket fits. The "water drain channel" had been cut or molded too near to the inside of the groove. A little silicon in the gap stoped the leaks. I probably should have sent the faulty lights back to Beckson, but the silicon fix is much easier than removing the whole assembly.
