I am a new owner of a 1996 Hunter 336. I have been sailing a long time, since 1962. This is my first non full keel boat. Are there any comments on the fin keel for a new owner? I would also like to know if the cutout around the Lewmar hatches on board were for screens, and if so where can I find this item? Thanks for your help. Art

Great boat

I have the same boat and I am very happy with it. Sails great and is very comfortable for 2 to spend weeks on. The cutouts are indeed for screens. Mine are from lewmar so you might try them. Enjoy, David

Fin Keel

I agree with what David said regarding comfort and screens. I, too, moved up from a full keel (1966 Islander 29) and found the biggest difference is in the movement of the stern when turning (into a slip, for example). The Islander tracked like a car going into a curve while the 336 has a turning point directly above the fin - as a result, the stern will "swing out" at the beginning of the turn. This much tighter turning radius will allow greater maneuverability once you get used to it. Also, in backing, I've found I need to get up some speed, return the motor speed to idle, and then turn the wheel before the rudder will "bite". All that being said, you're gonna' love that boat. Check out the owners reviews (under Boat Information on this site) to see what others like, dislike, and what modifications they've made. Ned and Tani Strain s/v Family Therapy 1995 h336 Chicago
