hunter 27 portland
Hello i have just bought a 78 27 cherubini, with that said, the old owner has gutted the engine, glassed over the shaft log and removed the forward water tank. then installed a 9 horse outboard. So my question should i add some ballast to the boat. she seem to handle nicely and i like all of the extra room as she is also my home on the water.

Once upon a time, someone suggested adding lead to eliminate a list on a certain type of boat.

My recommendation was to add BATTERIES!!! :):):)

A MUCH better use of lead.

My thought is that you should attempt some calculations. Original relatively heavy diesel located (probably) just forward of the pedestal. Replaced with somewhat lighter OB presumably mounted several feet further aft off the transom. Might not make much difference in the overall trim of the boat.

My 36' 1980 Hunter seems to handle better with water tanks empty.

And all that room for more beer.:dance::dance:;)
yes ... but to be consumed only after successfully getting my bow back into my slip and only after at least one dock line is secured!

Getting back to your opening post. Congrats on opting for a Cherubini Hunter. After I bought my 1980 Cherubini Hunter 36, I also encountered a For-Sale 27. The look and feel were the same ... just different sizes. Occasionally I pass near one particularly well restored 27 that sails on San Francisco Bay. The nice lines of a 27 give the impression of a much larger boat.

Hunter fitted many of the Cherubinin 27's with a one cylinder Renault diesel. An odd choice? I've seen references on this site that spare parts are virtually impossible to find. And re-powering with a different brand of engine is always difficult and expensive. These maybe the reasons someone in your boat's PO history did what you have described.

This SBO forum site does have all sorts of 27 specific info if you care to use the search function.

No need to add ballast. The little diesel barely weighed close to 200 lbs and the full water tank another 200 lbs. One being aft and the other forward kind of balance out. As far as total ballast weight it is insignificant.
