My wife and I just purchased Vega 1873, formerly "Aberation" of
Anapolis, MD. We sailed her up from NYC to Branford, CT over the
last two days. The Hudson was a bit hairy with rush hour water taxis
and ferries on Friday night, but Hell's Gate turned out to be a non
event. We spent the first night at Styvescent Yacht Club in City
Island, NY with a beautiful sunset and stripers jumping all around
us. Unfortunately I wasn't able to bring the rods down on the train.
Today was just a great ride. It was blowing, and and we were on one
tack the entire way from City Island, NY to Branford, CT. Averaged
over 6, and hit over 7 knots on a fairly tight reach the whole way
with blown out old sails and a reef or two in the main. She was
faster than I thought she would be and I have to say she handled the
day with grace. We are very pleased with our Vega.
The previous owner Bryan had repowered in 98 with a Yanmar GM20,
rebuild the forward bulkhead, and the rudder, so structuraly very
sound. Cosmetically she could use some help and we also plan to
upgrade all the sails and sail handling gear...after sailing and
enjoying her for a while. I look forward to posting many questions
for all the Vega experts on the board. Cheers, Eric
