Just a simple question from a "new" Catalina owner. How do I tell if my 1971 Catalina 27 is the standard or tall rig? Or where can I find the specs that define each version? Right now the only viable measurement I have is from the damaged roller furling that I recently removed. It was 34' 6". I have a feeling that makes this particular boat a tall rig. It sure looks like it. Thanks in advance, Mark G San Diego

Try the C27 Association website

and look at the brochures, which have the dimensions.

Here's the spec's we have

The tall rig: "I"=36.00 "J"=12.20 "P"=29.66 "E"=9.66 standard rig: "I"=34.50 "J"=11.25 "P"=28.66 "E"=10.50 Just in case you don't know what they refer to: "I" is from the deck to where the forestay attaches to the mast "J" is from the tack of the jib (where the jib/genoa attaches to the deck) back to the front of the mast "P" is the hoist of the mainsail "E" is the foot of the mainsail or length of boom. I squared + J squared = theoretical max luff squared (so square root the answer), so......the distance from the tack to the top of the mast should be just about 38ft for the tall rig. For most furler installations, the drum at the deck level and swivel up top take up around 18 inches of this. It sounds like you have the standard rig, but check the other dimensions. C27 Tall/Standard

The C27 Tall rig has a short bow sprit to increase the J measurement. The I, and J measurements are not easy to measure, as they are the two sides of a right triangle that meet inside the cabin. If you measure from the cabin top to where the forestay attaches to the mast you will be short.

tall rig has a bowsprit...

you don't have to measure anything. The bowsprit allows for the taller mast..shorter boom creates higher aspect ratio mainsail. You really must study the C27 owner's website. All brochures, spec sheets and owners' manuals are available there. http://www.catalina27.org/
