Suds, we keep our boat in salt water...

We use WM ablative paint on sale and we normally redo the hull every three to four years. That also includes new zincs and after cleaning all the bright work slathering on two thick coats of Desitin on the prop and prop shaft. Terry

1968 Islander with a 1938 owner both in pretty damn good shape. When the paint gets worn and thin looking put on a new coat, when the zincs start to look a little moth eaten replace them. oil or varnish the bright work every spring and fall and in between if it starts to look shabby. Most of all enjoy!!!;-)

Bottom paint

Had a Cat 30 for 18 years before I bought a Cat 34 MK II. Used Interlux CSC (black)all the time and got about 2-3 years per haulout. I raced the boat so I had it sprayed on but a roller job would work well for cruising and probably last longer. Now without racing on my Cat34 I'm using Pettit Trinidad rolled on and got 3+ years on the first go around.

WRT: ZINCS

Conventional wisdom sugests replacing zincs when they appear to be approximately half spent. Of course, most owners replace their zincs at bottomjob time to avoid additional haulout bills; consequently, the zincs get replaced well before half their life is over. I'm a cheap guy, but I feel better about throwing out zincs with life left in them rather than "riding them out" and hoping there's something left next time the hull comes out.

Many folks, in addition,

will have a diver check the hull every quarter or even more often. Divers job is to brush the slime off and replace zincs if need be. Stu

The same response - Old?

I had the same response as others here; 1990 isn't old, its almost new to me. I also have a 1975 boat. Up here in the Pacific North West (or South West coast of Canada), the average for many boat owners is an annual haul out on the hard to paint the bottom, repair, or replace parts, and dream of adding new items you can't afford yet.
