Greetings All! My wife and I bought our first Catalina 320 and we have a few questions. It's a 1994 and I want to keep the shallow bilge dry. I want to start by installing a dripless seal instead of the stuffing box. Where do I buy one? What is the best brand? Does the rudder need to come off to install? It has A/C and I would like to have it drain to a through hull instead of the bilge. Has anyone done this? What else should I do while it is out of the water that won't take that long?

Congradulations on your 320. I also have a 1994. I thought that the shallow bilge was the compartment where the bilge pump is located. The bilge is actually a grid system with overflow basins. The entire floor must be removed to gain access. Water from the bilge gained access to my port locker via the holes that were cut to feed the wires running from the base of the mast to the control panel. Another surprise for me was that all water does not drain into the bilge. Water getting in from under the galley does not go to the bilge. I pumped 8 gallons out recently that I did not know could exist. It sloshes around bewteen the port and starboard around the bilge. Check the bottom of the cabinets for water where the waste tank is mounted and under the port cabinet as well. I discovered all this while heeling on to port. I opened up the galley cabinet to access the through hull and found water sloshing about. Catalina suggests leaving the scews out of the center boards for regular inspection and drying. They also suggested varnishing the under side of the floors. Outside of that little problem, I thoroughly enjoy my C320. She is a dream to sail and stay on board.
