New overhead

We stripped the carpet off the overhead when we got the boat, since it was falling down and seemed to be dry rotted. My plan is to make panels of formica, probably about 24" long (for and aft) and wide enough to span the overhead from the top of the woodwork on each cabin side, and sprung into place tight to the ceiling. I was going to epoxy battens across the overhead where the seams between panels would be so I can screw some teak battens over the seams.
similar to the pic shown.
Has anyone done anything like this? Any other suggestions for making a headliner?

i used marine rubber backed carpet to do this ...it will keep the moisture to a minimum...i have worked with plastic laminate a lot but never just suspended it ...usually it was glued to a substrate

I've never done it but did save a photo off of yachtworld of an 11.0 that did something similar. Not sure it will help but here it is:
