I am shopping for a new outboard for my oday 22. Is a yamama 4hp 4 stroke a good choice for my boat. I wanted a 4 stroke for the noise reduction, fuel economy and enviromentaly. Does anyone know if this is enough horse power to get the boat up to its hull speed of 5.8kts. Thanks

I put a new 6hp 4-stroke Yamaha on my O'22 three years ago, and, with a clean bottom, 1/2 to 2/3 throttle will take me up to hull speed. If one can extrapolate, I'd say that a 4hp might do the job; but, it would be marginal.

5 hp in O'Day 222

Larry My new to me 1986 222 Oday came with a new (used four times ) Nissan 5 Hp 4-stroke pushes the 222 very well at 1/2 to 3/4 open throttle. And the spin off at this speed is real great fuel economy. Wide open uses twice the amount of fuel and does not increase the speed that much. Here it is mid July and I have just tapped into my 4th gallon of fuel this year. I found that Tohatsu sp? makes the Mercury, Sears Game Fisher and Nissan and some other brands too. I also wondered if there would be enough power for Lake Erie at 5 hp but seems to be plenty. Is a 22 heavier than the 222??.. Maybe,

6 hp 2 stroke

Watch your transom! I have a 22 and wanted a 4 stroke but learned that the torque would damage my transom. I went with a 2005 2 stroke Johnson. More than enough power in some really tough currents. I get about 10 hours from 3 gals of fuel and mixing isn't a bother. Remember - we have SAIL boats - not power boats!I would suggest looking at a new 2 stroke - some are more environmentally friendly than you think.

my thought on the matter...

I can't speak for the 22, I have a 25. I just recently replaced my Honda 7.5 4-stroke with a new Mercury 9.9 4 stroke. I couldn't be happier with the Merc. Not that I wasn't happy with the Honda, it just died on me and my family in a treacherous pass and I was instructed as "never again". $2000 dollars later I have a new Mercury. The extra horsepower is not apparent, except in reverse while docking and close quarter operations. Love the Merc., highly recommend it. Ross

2 stroke 8.5hp Sailmaster on our O'Day 22

We've been using the 8.5 Sailcraft long shaft on our boat for several years now... it's a 2 stroke. I didn't know of any transom issues before on the 22... what should my main concerns be? I've been sailing the 22 for 16 years now.. love that boat!
