New Outboard Motor Mount

Just got started mounting my new motor mount. It will do away with the old off to the side motor mount. This one has the motor mounted directly behind the rudder and the controls are operated by cable and mounted on the tiller handle. That way I will be able to stand up in the cockpit and control the motor gears and throttle and the tiller all in one place. The motor block ( the wood part) is 2" Solid White Oak), the motor will be lifted up out of the water by a pair of eye bolts to a double block and locked in place. When lifted, the motor will be totally out of the water.

Last year I figured out that I am not too competent sitting the the port cockpit corner reaching down and back with my left hand to control the motor and then with the right hand the tiller all the while trying not to crash into the dock I can't see.

They are through bolted with 1/4" SSteel backer plates and SSteel nylock nuts.

Trip Report:

We finally got the new motor mount installed and the power tiller installed. We took her to the Mississippi and tested it out on our two outings and the launch and retrieval.

The Power Tiller made me think I was in a big expensive boat. I had complete control of her. Even in high winds, the ability to control throttle and gears from the tiller handle was wonderful. I was able to operate like the guys with the fancy wheel steer and controls on the pedestal. It was such a pleasure.

I would highly recommend the system to any one who is tired of reaching backwards to get to the throttle and the gears or approaching the dock butt first as you hang head down over the stern trying to control your outboard.

The new outboard motor mount was fine, needs some small adjustment. It easily supported the outboard behind the rudder and stayed locked in the straight ahead position. I have to work out the bugs in the raising and lowering part of it.
