I am a new O'day owner and have some questions. Please excuse my ignorance in this area, I did say I'm new. 1. How do I tell what I have? I think it is a convertible 23. I think it is a shoal keel. What is the best size kicker for this boat? Is there a supplier for cushions? If not how about patterns.

Some ideas
The easiest way to verify the make and model of your boat is to look at the hull id number. It is usually located on the upper right corner of the transom. Check out this web site to help you decipher its meaning http://www.boatsafe.com/nauticalknowhow/hin.htm If you do have an Oday 23, welcome to the club. there is info on the boat on this site, as well as at www.iheartodays.com I use an 8 hp two stroke engine on my Oday 23, and it is plenty powerful. If you buy a four stroke, you can even do with less hp. Just remember that the OEM bracket won't be strong enough to take a four stroke engine and you will have to replace it. Its not just the weight of the engine, but the additional torque generated by the four stroke that you have to account for. I don't think there is a supplier that has Oday 23 cushion patterns on hand. You will have to take your old cushions to someone to have them made. I should warn you to be prepared for sticker shock. I looked into it several years ago, and was quoted a price for new cushions that approached half of the boat's initial purchase price! Hunt around for the best price; I suggest trying not only the marine guys, but also check out your landlubber upholsterers as well. They won't charge the "marine" premium.

May I suggest a excellent book for the small boat owner. "Sailing Big on a Small Boat" by Jerry Cardwell. I have read and reviewed this book so much, that it is now held together with scotch tape. plus some duct tape too. Get it! If your boat is a 23, you can run up to a 15HP two stroke engine. Older Johnson or Evinrude 9.9s are actually 15 HP engines with smaller carbs created to be used on lakes that had an under 10HP restriction. You can run your boat at hull speed at half throttle. If you need more power, and you will, you will have it. Another tip from the book, was cushion replacement, 4 inch minimum thickness. Foam also comes in differnt densities. You will notice a big diffence within a few months of use. I had the new foam cut using the old cushions as a pattern. Then, as suggested by Mike, went to a auto upholstery shop to aquire the material plus sewing. I saved over 50% on my orginal quote. Happy Boat Ownership! Jack

Mike, I had tried this site and the lettering and numbers did not jive with my boats configuration. I wanted to know if I had what is called a convertable.
